I don't think this is as clear cut as people are making it out to be.

There are a few that come closer like Kent Paul in Vice City, but it never strikes me that they were trying to implement the artwork in the game, even by the standards of PS2 visuals. Similar with the cowboy character voiced by Burt Reynolds.

I don't see Misty's character in her artwork either. Though he does look like later artworks of him in different games. eg, Salvatore Leone in GTA3 does not look like his artwork at all. I don't see much more to it than this, I think it's more technical limits as opposed to intent or even intent dictated by technical limits. The Warriors looks better but is a much more late generation PS2 game, like how San Andreas has better quality character models. I just don't think the graphical quality of these old GTA games are clear enough to get across any real attempt at caricature. Some of these characters look almost 2D, they are so limited in their expressiveness.

I don't see Misty's character in her artwork either. Spectrum unveiled the premiere date and trailer for Manhunt Season 2, which is subtitled Deadly Games and covers the search for the 1996 Atlanta Summers Olympics bomber. I think there are legitimate criticisms of things that maybe they've done to accentuate this even more - Tommy's shiny arms, wrinkles on Ken's forehead being less present, etc - but when I saw the definitive trailer, my initial reaction was, "Yeah, that's more or less how I remember those games looking back when I played them." They weren't cartoonish while playing them when they came out, but they look that way now compared to all the other advancements in modeling that have been made since.Ĭlick to shrink. To me that is not clear at all, sorry. But I think that ultimately, short of them doing a Resident Evil 2-style remake of these games, the character models for these editions was always going to look cartoonish because that's simply how the models looked back then for one reason or another. Playing these as a teen in high school, I didn't regard them the same way I regarded Jet Set Radio, Okami, or other stylized "cartoonish" games. I don't know that old GTA was meant to be cartoonish, but that was ultimately the effect either due to hardware limitations at the time or whatever else.
